Bahu Bhasa 2025 Report
Bahu Bhasa 2025, organised by the Open Knowledge Initiatives (OKI) programme in collaboration with the Language Technologies Research Centre (LTRC), at IIIT Hyderabad was an effort to engage with the current state of Indian languages, their challenges, opportunities, and (digital) futures. This three day event was an endeavour in learning from initiatives and ideas rooted in different Indian languages, and in understanding how technology, policy and community can work together to build and shape a multilingual digital future. The gathering of approximately 85 people, including but not limited to language enthusiasts, activists, technologists, linguists, educators, researchers, open knowledge practitioners, policymakers and community organisations representing over 30 major and non-dominant, underrepresented, and low-resource languages came together to present their work, seek feedback, and create opportunities for further collaborations.
The event was conceptualised to build on the work of the OKI programme with Indian language Wikimedia communities, and the larger open knowledge ecosystem for over a decade. It was also an important foray into newer areas of work related to language policy, technology development and community engagement. The increased investment and interest in Indian languages by the state and industry over the past few years, the growth of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, and the evolving role of language communities and activists in shaping public discourse foregrounds several questions around multilinguality, which this event tried to unpack and engage with over the course of three days.
